  • THE GHARIAL Do Your Kids Know This?: A Children's Picture Book

    Tanya Turner

    language (, April 14, 2017)
The Gharial is a species of crocodile and it belongs to the reptile family (yes, it’s also related to snakes). Since the Gharial is also known as the “fish-eating crocodile,” you already have an idea about its favorite food. While the Gharial may look very much like other species of crocodiles (and even alligators), it’s actually a unique creature. It even holds the title as the “longest of all living crocodilians” (this includes both crocodile and alligator species). You must be wondering why it’s called Gharial. Its name is actually taken from the word “ghara.” Ghara is an Indian pot (a specially designed pot) – and the tip of the Gharial’s snout somewhat looks like a ghara. Compared to other species of crocodiles, their snouts are longer and thinner, as well. In fact, their snouts can be as long as three feet or more. Their long, thin snouts actually make it easy for them to catch fish (their favorite food). The average size of Gharials is 11 to 15 feet – so it’s very long (it is the record holder for the longest of all living crocodilians, after all). In fact, some Gharials can also reach up to 20 feet in length – that’s really long and scary as well.Excited to learn more about the Gharial?
